as I reach for my mobile device..

Monday to Friday I carry 2 phones around with me which are for personal & work and on the weekends it’s just the one while occasionally checking the work one. I use my smart phones for everything and can confess would be a little lost & slow without them. I would be like a computer without a USB port – still able to function but performing functions would take a little longer and less instant than usual..

I do feel however that I’ve become more impatient with my mobile devices,  or it may just be that I am in the 3rd trimester of pregnancy & highly irritable..

Being surrounded by my selection of mobile devices such as smart phones, tablets, laptops & the likes has trained & allowed me to be able to have instant information and instant communication, but what good is it doing me & is it affecting my role at work?
This link from the editor in chief and president of the Huffington Post, Arianna Huffington took me by surprise, as she urges us to disconnect to enable us to tap into our creativeness to become more innovative at work.

Huh?.. but I thought using all my mobile devices with their creative apps and research functions were going to help me to become more creative, innovative and improve my communication as they claim to do ?

Well no doubt in some cases I most definitely think they do, without my smart phone note pad app I would still be writing reminder messages on my hand and my arm would be covered in words like bread, tomato, toilet paper... in saying that I cant remember the last time I wrote a shopping list on paper using a pen.

But does having all this instant information at our fingertips as I mentioned    previously do us any good?
Hans Geser seems to think otherwise as he states “Given the constant availability of external communication partners (as sources of opinion and advice) individuals may easily unlearn the ability to rely on their own judgment, memory and reflection”
Perhaps this is where our own ability to think creatively is being lost?!  With the constant 24/7 switch on are we pushing aside our own thoughts, ideas and gut feelings ?

Hmm Huffington may be onto something here..

This left me pondering about where the future of mobile devices will be in 10 years time, and as I ironically reached for one of my many mobile devices to help me answer my own conundrum I smiled and found this you tube video showing where they will be in year 2020.

Until next time, logging off..

  1. Well written Daniela. I wonder if using a 'creative' app on a phone or tablet is the same as being creative with, say, paint or clay or wool..things you can really touch and feel. Does it have the same affect on our brain?
